Ignored on the message boards!

Ok...my blog friend Jenidallas (I will link this tomorrow because this stupid computer will not let me link) made a comment on her blog about how she feel ignored on a certain message board. I am assuming and trust me it is possible that I am making an ass out of you and me, that she is talking about 2Peas. I love love love 2 peas, but the message boards are out of control. When she said that she got ignored I decided to comment on her little comment section about how I felt the same way. I love validation and I love to get it! As I was typing I realized that I have some strong feelings about the people on the board. They are cliqueish...

I have come to the conclusion that the more you are ignored, probably the more of a "real life" you have. Hello our jobs prevent us from being in on all the cool jokes...Seriously there is a multipage thread that has the title of "um" and then her message is "nevermind." How does that thread get 102 posts and mine get zero. I have to contemplate the btt, but I never do it because the "cool" poster always make fun of people who have to btt their own post. It is like they are saying, you don't say anything cool enough for me to respond to but I can say Um and people loooooove me.

I have made some great friends on 2Peas. I went to CKU with a bunch of them, but for the most part I think I should stay away from the Non-Scrapbooking related Boards! It is mean, troublesome. People waste a lot of energy and integrity by addressing what we call a troll.

Troll-a person who disturbes the harmony of waiting lynch mob on a message board.

People who don't scrapbook or even want to bond over scrapbooking come to this message board because it is, frankly the coolest, most active board I have ever seen, try to cause trouble. The problem is that we jump at the bait. It is like a SAHM riotous mob that is just waiting to express their personal opinion about pit bulls and types of cars that make you snobby, without reading other peoples opinions of course!

I really do love them some of the time. I tend to be more of a lurker than a participant which is probably why I get ignored. The collective 2Peas community are the smartest people I know...even my husband encourages me to post when we have a question about something. I get ignored of course so I can say pretty much whatever I want. I bet that is why there are trolls because at least someone pays attention to them!

Sometimes I think you read my mind, Jessi. Yeah, you did hit the nail on the head of what I was talking about.

Really though, it makes me go back to feeling like the dumb girl I was in junior high. There would be a table full of girls in the cafeteria wearing the same jeans as me, same brand shirt, etc. And they would be talking about something I knew something about. So I would sit down on the end and listen a bit and then say something. And they would look at me like I had three heads - and then stop talking. Or pick up and go onto a different topic like I wasn't even there. And that always hurt.

I've just gone back and looked at a few things from recent days and realized that maybe I'm still looking for that validation. I'll post something that I think is funny - and then boom, no reply afterwards, because I'm a thread killer. Or worse yet, lots of replies after, but my post ignored.

Okay... time to go back to MY blog and post this... because I'm hijacking yours!

I'm a pea. I avoid most of the controversy unless it has to do with ignorance about breastfeeding, co-sleeping, or crying it out. (And there seems to be more than anyones fair share of that everywhere.)

I'm one that rarely ever even looks at who makes posts- I'm looking for salaciously titled posts. I also rarely post me-too responses. I delete a lot of responses that might sound offensive. I hold back a lot. I BTT by "thanking" for advice, or asking further questions. None of my posts have been blockbusters though. I'm generally a thread killer.

I took a class in my ed tech masters program where we had to examine two online communities that we were part of- problems, differences, ways people dealt with controversy, relationships, etc. It was interesting that problems seemed cyclical- trouble ( in 2peas's case- trolls) reared its ugly head to stir things up, then went back underground for hibernation, then back to cause trouble once the community members felt safe again. (My online communities were Pemberley- Jane Austen associated and RCTQ newsgroup- rec.crafts.textiles.quilting.) Each had its bullies, its "popular" kids, its cliques.

The dynamic of online relationships is so different because there's seldom a face to face component. We say and do things that we would never do in person. I've really tried hard to stay true to myself online- I've never lied or knowingly mislead anyone.

I'm glad you're a pea, otherwise, I'd never have found your blog.

I feel the same way about 2peas. I mostly lurk, because I get ignored too. The GDT (general daily thread) on Weightwatchers.com is like the NSBR board, but even snarkier, if you can imagine that. It's very entertaining, though.
